Today, Microsoft announced a significant investment in the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, comprising $60 million aimed at accelerating AI for science. This initiative includes the launch of the Scientific Partnership Advancing Research & Knowledge coordination hub, or SPARK, to facilitate collaboration and enhance scientific discovery.
The Genesis Mission is an ambitious project that aims to unify the DOE’s 17 National Laboratories, experimental facilities, and scientific data within a single platform. The mission's primary objective is to double the productivity and impact of American research over the next decade by integrating AI into the scientific process. Microsoft's investment is structured into $40 million in Azure compute and AI credits over three years, and $20 million in solution engineering services to support large-scale AI workloads and operational outcomes.
SPARK serves as the central hub for collaboration between Microsoft and the Genesis Mission. It coordinates efforts across program management, technical services, and joint research, ensuring a streamlined path from ideas to scientific deployment. SPARK supports the mission through five commitments: a dedicated program management office, an AI for Science Center of Excellence, optimization of Azure credits, management of technical services, and joint R&D efforts.
