Only 39 safety roles as builders dominate; OpenAI still leads

Safety alarms are getting louder, but the jobs are still for builders. Even with OpenAI turmoil in the background, hiring velocity has not pivoted toward evaluation or governance; OpenAI is still opening roles faster than Anthropic, and most new seats remain in engineering and data. Across the 166 employers we track, 3,630 AI roles were open as of 2026-08-20, up 46 on the week. Our model puts new AI jobs created month-to-date at roughly 126,630. In one snapshot that underscored the imbalance, we counted only 39 safety roles in 3,624 AI openings. That disconnect is the week’s story: rising concern about alignment meets a labor market investing in shipping.

For people whose work is affected, incentives are clear. Engineers and data specialists can expect continued demand and faster hiring cycles, while evaluation and safety candidates face scarce openings and heavier competition for influence inside product-led teams. Managers will feel pressure to bolt risk assessment onto delivery schedules rather than staff it as a standalone function. The result is more responsibility flowing to generalist builders to integrate safeguards, review model behavior, and document impacts. Unless requisitions shift, safety expertise will track where the headcount is: embedded in platform and infra groups, not in separate centers of excellence.
