The same week engineers are told to relearn faster, AI is being packaged for everyone else. Reports of rapid skill turnover in engineering meet OpenAI's launch of ChatGPT Work for non-engineers at $20/month. Posts warn of data-center backlash, model fatigue and youth job losses, but hiring tells a different near-term story. Across the 200 employers we track, 4,239 AI roles were open as of 2026-08-25, up 87 on the week. Our model puts new AI jobs created month-to-date at roughly 147,102. Even our own snapshots vary by lens: one view counted 4,234 roles across 174 employers; another showed 4,101 openings, skewed to engineering, with OpenAI and Anthropic adding roles, and Anthropic opening half as many as OpenAI. The throughline is uneven acceleration. Engineering and infrastructure remain the center of gravity, yet tools built for non-engineers shift more tasks across functions. For workers, the playbook splits. Engineers need adaptability and fresh training as roles evolve. Non-engineers gain a lower-cost on-ramp to automation, even as entry paths for youth are debated. Education systems face pressure to catch up.
