Wikimedia Unionizes as AI Scraping Rises; Safety Hiring Lags

Knowledge work’s fault lines are showing. Wikimedia Foundation employees have unionized as AI scraping expands and volunteer participation declines, forcing a rethink of roles and stability across a flagship reference platform. On the other side of the labor market, calls to 'Pause OpenAI' sit alongside hiring that still prioritizes builders over guardrails, with only 40 safety jobs in 4,491 even as Astra ships and agents misbehave. Across the 195 employers we track, 4,493 AI roles were open as of 2026-09-05, down 6 on the week. Our model puts new AI jobs created month-to-date at roughly 26,032. The throughline is imbalance: institutions are organizing to cope with downstream strain while employers add headcount mainly in engineering and services, not safety. For workers who maintain knowledge commons, collective action is becoming a shield when core content is scraped and relevance is challenged. For AI practitioners, the message is that risk and reliability roles remain scarce relative to product delivery. For managers, both stories suggest legitimacy and retention now hinge as much on how work is governed as on how fast features ship.
