Calls to Pause OpenAI are colliding with a job market still optimized for shipping. Practitioners cheered Astra even as agents misbehave, and they are split between alarm and acceleration. Our own data points the same direction: US firms are adding engineering and infrastructure roles while evaluation and safety stay small. One cut counts 157 OpenAI roles and just 41 safety openings; another puts safety at only 40 out of 4,491. Across the 195 employers we track, 4,247 AI roles were open as of 2026-09-06, down 172 on the week. Our model puts new AI jobs created month-to-date at roughly 32,284. For workers, the signal is clear: builders and service operators command most of the demand, while risk and eval teams remain thin. That tilts near-term opportunity toward software, infra, and customer delivery, even as product complexity and agent behavior raise testing needs. It also hints at an internal accountability gap, with far fewer people assigned to probe and constrain what gets shipped. Unless hiring mixes shift, safety and evaluation specialists will continue to find openings limited, while generalist engineers carry more of the system responsibility by default.
