Agentic AI is surging even as calls to shut the labs grow louder, and hiring is not following safety. Companies are channeling demand into core engineering while consultancies lead the hiring, leaving evaluation and safety thin. Across the 192 employers we track, 4,159 AI roles were open as of 2026-09-27, down 300 on the week. Our model puts new AI jobs created month-to-date at roughly 144,948. Earlier snapshots underline the skew: our tracker shows 4,396 open AI roles across 179 employers, but only 46 in evaluation and safety. That gap collides with the other lesson of the week: as automation takes the repeatable work, advantage shifts to human judgment and decision-making, and training has to include those human elements. For workers, that means fewer check-the-box roles and more oversight, problem framing, and client-facing integration work. For employers, risk postures and capability needs are diverging: speed on agents, but scant capacity to measure or secure them. Expect consultancies and hybrid roles to absorb much of the near-term growth while safety hiring remains a bottleneck.
