Boardrooms are being asked to steer AI while warnings about agent risks grow, yet hiring tilts toward builders, not evaluators. An IBM study finds CFOs moving beyond traditional oversight into enterprise technology and AI strategy, and expecting by 2030 to help shape AI's ethical and operational frameworks. In parallel, automation is remaking data science work by stripping out routine tasks and pushing practitioners toward strategic decision-making and broader career paths. Across the 191 employers we track, 4,298 AI roles were open as of 2026-09-30, down 312 on the week. Our model puts new AI jobs created month-to-date at roughly 158,342. Against that backdrop, our analysis notes just 46 evaluation and safety roles open out of 4,303 across 180 employers, and hiring still skews to engineers despite security scares and agent mishaps. The signal is clear for workers: leadership teams are absorbing AI governance and strategy, data scientists are being asked to translate models into decisions, and dedicated evaluators remain thin on the ground. For candidates, that means pairing technical fluency with risk and process skills pays off, while safety specialists may face tight openings even as their mandate expands.
