California limits AI-only HR decisions as coding gains hit 32.6%
- Open AI roles
- 250 on the weekdown
- Created month to date
- 6,552 Modelled
- Employers tracked

California has enacted laws preventing companies from relying solely on AI for employment decisions, while startups project a 32.6% productivity boost for software engineers using tools like Anthropic Claude Code and OpenAI Codex. The contrast captures this week's divide: more output per coder and fresh model launches on one side, and new guardrails and labor bottlenecks on the other. Across the 191 employers we track, 4,322 AI roles were open as of 2026-10-02, down 250 on the week. Our model puts new AI jobs created month-to-date at roughly 6,552. That softening in openings lands as the U.S. added 90,000 private jobs in September, with growth tied to AI infrastructure and shortages looming in construction and manufacturing as wage dynamics shift. Tools keep coming: Google's Gemini 4 Argon expands token capacity for select organizations, and Cloudflare's Clef releases open-source decision models and reinforcement learning fine-tuning. Yet governance is unsettled. Leaders lack consensus on AI risk accountability, even as public conversation tilts toward safety and regulation. Our own data shows most hiring still clusters in modelling, data, and infrastructure, with few roles in evaluation and safety. Employers are threading a narrow path: integrate AI into workflows, redesign roles, and upskill engineers, while complying with new rules and standing up oversight.
