Risk talk is rising, but hiring points the other way. A wave of posts raises concerns about AI risk, meaning, and cost. Yet companies are staffing builders far more than watchdogs. Our analysis finds just 47 evaluation and safety openings beside 1,683 building roles as enterprises tool up and worry about spend. Across the 190 employers we track, 4,227 AI roles were open as of 2026-10-05, down 94 on the week. Our model puts new AI jobs created month-to-date at roughly 19,846. The dip with strong creation suggests organizations are still adding AI capacity while being sharper about where it goes. For workers, the center of gravity is engineering and applied product work, including efforts that manage cost and reliability within delivery. Safety and evaluation roles exist but are a small slice, so candidates with those interests may find more traction embedded in build teams. For managers, the signal is clear: capability work continues to win headcount even as risk dominates the conversation. That mismatch sets expectations for staffing plans this quarter and for where skills will pay in the near term.
