A push to automate research and routine computer work took center stage this week. Leadership changes at Google DeepMind, alongside moves to automate research processes, sit next to tool launches that put autonomous agents inside the browser. Hark opened sign-ups for Handoff to perform web-based tasks, and Cloudflare released Kitesurf, a stateless browser for agents. That combination points to faster workflow automation in labs and offices, with entry-level knowledge tasks most exposed and new operator roles likely to arise.
Across the 43 employers we track, 1,149 AI roles were open as of 2026-07-31. Our model puts new AI jobs created month-to-date at roughly 51,386. Hiring scale remains high, but where the demand lands is shifting. In India, more than 70% of startups now use AI, especially in marketing, reshaping how roles are defined. In energy, power grids are pulling in hybrids, engineers fluent in data and data scientists fluent in energy.
Compliance is now a gating factor. OpenAI’s $3.2 million DOJ settlement over hiring discrimination allegations underlines risks in visa-dependent strategies, a signal that recruiting pipelines and sponsorship plans may have to change. Meanwhile Gen Z is leaning into human skills and career growth alongside AI tools, pushing employers to design training that pairs autonomy with judgment. The common thread is clear, automation is moving from experiment to infrastructure while skills and rules decide who does the work and where.
